• Spyder Names Patrick Dempsey as Brand Ambassador

    Starting in Spring 2015, Spyder is pleased to announce that Patrick Dempsey will be the new face of Spyder. The Spring line specifically is autosport inspired, and with his car racing accomplishments, Dempsey is an ideal fit.

    Racing has always been his true passion, and with that, Dempsey maintains sports car and vintage car collections. He has competed in prestigious pro-­-am events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Rolex 24 at Daytona, and Tecate SCORE Baja 100 off-­-road race. Dempsey is best known for his television role as neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd (also known as “McDreamy”) on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. On the big screen, his many films include Enchanted, Can’t Buy Me Love, Made of Honor, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. He grew up skiing the East Coast, racing in Lewiston, Maine.

    Dempsey will represent the brand throughout the year. He will also partner with Spyder athlete and IndyCar driver, James Hinchcliffe, to serve as the canvas to the auto-­-racing inspired GT line.

  • World Championships '15

    February 2015

    For the first time since 1999, the World Championships were back in the United States, for two action packed weeks of racing, music, and abundant sunshine. We saw a gold medal won by American's Ted Ligety and Mikaela Shiffrin, as well as a silver medal awarded to Travis Ganong in the Downhill, and bronze medal to Lindsey Vonn in the Super-G and Ted Ligety in the Combined.     In terms of Spyder athletes, we saw an inspired Downhill by Steven Nyman, who finished in 4th place, just one shy of the bronze medal. See full Men’s Downhill results here

    After finishing in the top-20 in the Downhill &Combined, Julia Mancuso saw her best results in the Super G, finishing 9th. See full Women’s Super G results here

    Jared Goldberg, the youngest member of the Spyder athlete and US Ski Team(s) showed promise after being a last minute addition to the roster following a gruesome injury to Bode Miller. See Bode’s crash here

    After placing 20th in the downhill, Goldberg finished 3rd in the 1st/Downhill portion of the Combined, before skiing out of the slalom in the afternoon.

    A speed specialist, the 23-year old Goldberg also recorded the fastest time in the lower portion of the downhill, leaving quite the impression on coaches and fans. See full Combined results here

    The World Championships proved to be an incredible two weeks for the US Ski Team, their fans, and the sport in general; which flooded the stands each day in Vail-Beaver Creek.The attendance proved to be record breaking for any recent domestic ski race, with the 10,000+ grand stands seats being filled to capacity hours before each race.

    SIA'15 proved to be a very exciting weekend for Spyder, as we unveiled the new trade-show booth, as well as hosted our annual 'Lot Party' across the street from the Colorado Convention Center.

    Our new booth proved to turn heads at the show, introducing a new space for Spyder employees,retailers, and fans to socialize, work, and engage with our brand. See candid booth imagery here

    When walking the venue, it could be quickly observed how unique Spyder's new booth was compared to other action sports companies; resembling a global activation space compared to the common slat wall display of product.

    Our annual 'Lot Party' proved to be our most successful one to date, with Spyder partnering with HEAD Skis, Audi-Boulder, Carlsberg, Blue Ice Vodka, Rhino Racks, and 3M Thinsulate. With over 1,600 attendees throughout the night, Spyder also welcomed athletes Sierra Quitiquit, Chris Davenport, Julian Carr, Jess McMillan, and Julia Mancuso to the party. See full image deck here

  • Spyder Unveils U.S. Alpine Ski Team Olympic Competition Uniforms

    Spyder Active Sports, Inc., the iconic ski and active lifestyle apparel brand specializing in high tech fabrication and sport-specific function, today unveiled the competition uniforms to be worn by the U.S. Alpine Ski Team at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Spyder, a long-time sponsor of the U.S. Ski Team, provides the team with its race suits and on-snow apparel.

    For close to 25 years, Spyder has designed state-of-the-art apparel and race suits for world class ski athletes including the U.S. Alpine Ski Team, and the Winter Olympics have traditionally given the brand the opportunity to showcase its technological excellence and design superiority on a global scale. 

    For these Winter Olympics, the design process has yielded Spyder’s most technologically advanced and perhaps most visually impactful uniform pieces to-date. Most notably, for the U.S. Ski Team Olympic Race Suit, the seventh Olympic Race Suit Spyder has designed for the U.S. Ski Team, Spyder has combined its ‘fastest in the world’ suit technology with a compelling, patriotic design story that directly references the famed Star-Spangled Banner. 

    According to the person responsible for the design, Spyder’s Production Art Manager Matt Strackbein, “when creating the [U.S. Ski Team Olympic] race suit graphics we knew it was crucial that the racers felt a sincere sense of patriotism, so we utilized ‘stars and stripes’ in a less traditional, more dynamic way … as important as it was to represent the U.S.A., it was equally important that the athletes look and feel fast. When I began the design process, I thought about times when I feel that same degree of patriotism and I immediately thought about the National Anthem, so I decided to use the song lyrics from the Star Spangled Banner for inspiration. Per the song, one of the most meaningful sightings of the American Flag happened the morning after Francis Scott key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry. There, ‘by dawns early light,’ Key saw that ‘our flag was still there,’ albeit a much larger flag than the small storm-flag that had flown over the fort all night during the battle. But what stood out most upon reading the lyrics was that, because the air was so laden with smoke after the battle, Key recognized it rippling in the water off the edge of the ship on which he was being held captive. I tried to imagine what he was feeling in his heart at that moment – surely a deep sense of pride, not unlike the feeling an athlete must have when they win Olympic Gold. So, for the race suit, we used blue and white fades in the design to represent that early morning setting, and thinner red and white stripes to represent the flag rippling in the water. The goal was to capture as much of that imagery in the race suit as possible so that the U.S. Ski Team  Athletes can potentially feel that heightened sense of hope, pride, courage and determination.”

    By bringing a new product distribution facility online in Kent, Washington, Spyder stands to enhance its service commitment to its ever-growing dealer base.

    BOULDER, Colo. (June 20, 2013) 
    – Spyder Active Sports, Inc. the Colorado-based manufacturer of premium 
    technical ski and active lifestyle apparel, has announced that it has made a 
    significant update to its product distribution network in order to further 
    support current market demand and accommodate future growth objectives. 
    Specifically, the Spyder Distribution Network (SDN) has added a new 
    distribution facility in Kent, Washington to enhance its service commitment to 
    its ever-growing dealer base in North America.

     

    The objective of the new the new facility in Kent, WA is to 
    address challenges in Spyder’s vertical supply chain and set a solid foundation 
    for the company to continue the positive growth it has achieved during the past 
    four years.

     

    “The new distribution facility in 
    Kent, Washington is going to allow us to make significant strides in how we 
    deliver our products to our dealers in what is tight and challenging delivery cycle,” 
    noted Ellen Welley, Spyder’s VP of Sales for North America. “This enhancement 
    to the SDN will allow Spyder to remain cost competitive in our industry while 
    continuing to deliver to the marketplace the premium product assortment for

    Spyder has identified three key 
    factors that played into the decision to onboard the new distribution facility 
    in Washington.  First, in

    the West Coast – geographically the closest place in North America to Spyder’s 
    Far East production hubs – will help control transit costs and ensure the 
    brand’s ability to remain price-competitive; second, having a facility on the West 
    Coast gives Spyder a competitive advantage in transit times from its vendors in 
    the Far East and will expedite the delivery of products to both the U.S. and 
    Canadian Markets; and third, the proven success of the Washington facility and 
    its personnel in dealing in a highly seasonal, high volume environment will bring 
    new confidence to Spyder dealers that tight deadlines will be met during 
    Spyder’s delivery cycle.

     

    The Kent, WA facility 
    will be brought online as part of the SDN for the Fall 2013 selling season. The 
    SDN will continue to support additional needs of dealers, sales reps, and Spyder’s 
    corporate office with an existing facility in Aurora, CO.

    2012) – Spyder Active Sports, Inc., the Colorado-based manufacturer of premium 
    technical ski apparel, has secured even more talent on its big mountain athlete 
    roster thanks to a renewed relationship with Chris Davenport and the signing of 
    Sierra Quitiquit, both to three-year deals.

     

    Davenport, an industry veteran who has been a Spyder athlete since 
    2010, has enjoyed a storied career as a professional big mountain skier and ski 
    mountaineer, having amassed an impressive list of on-mountain accomplishments 
    that have included, most recently, epic projects on Colorado’s 14ers, the Pacific 
    Northwest’s Volcanoes, and Mt. Everest.

     

    Quitiquit, 23, grew up ski racing in Park City, UT, with her 
    father, a former U.S. Alpine Ski Team Member, as her coach. She recently burst 
    onto the scene as not only a talented and driven big mountain skier, but also 
    as a globally recognized fashion model. Defining diverse talent, when she’s not 
    skiing big lines in Utah, Quitiquit can be found in New York City where she 
    anchors a global ad campaign for American Eagle Outfitters.

  • Testing the fastest speed suits in the world

    Spyder and the U.S. Ski Team take to the wind tunnel to test the fastest speed suits in the world.

    The partnership shared between Spyder and the U.S. Ski Team has spanned over three decades and has accounted for an abounding number of World Cup and Olympic Medals. A big part of that partnership is focused on creating the fastest speed suits in the world – athletes travel up to 90 MPH in a typical World Cup downhill course, and aerodynamics matter.

    Also important is designing speed suits that are compliant with the stringent rules set by the Federation of International Skiing (FIS) for air permeability (so that in the case of a crash, friction is mitigated so as to prevent the suit from literally melting to the athlete).

    In order to ensure that the suits Spyder designs for the U.S. Ski Team strike a perfect balance between speed and permeability, we conduct annual wind tunnel tests – a couple of weeks ago, we took Spyder Athlete and U.S. Ski Team Speedster Steven Nyman to the Low Speed Wind Tunnel (LSWT) in San Diego to run a battery of tests on various suits at various speeds and under various other conditions (we can’t tell you – it’s a secret). 

    The LSWT can create a controllable flow of air at as low as 10 MPH, and can ramp up its turbine to create a flow as high as 70 MPH, so we were able to test various suits at various speed intervals and collect useful data. 

    While we aren’t going to tell you about the detailed results of the tests we performed, we will tell you that the suits that Spyder designs for the U.S. Ski Team are the fastest in the world.

    San Diego’s LSWT was opened in 1947 to test the World War II planes and bombs being produced in the San Diego vicinity. Today, it plays host to a number of ‘human missile tests’ like the one we conducted with Steven Nyman.

    BOULDER, Colo. – Spyder Active Sports, Inc., the Colorado-based manufacturer of premium technical ski apparel has just announced that it has signed with Burbank, California based entertainment marketing agency UPP Entertainment Marketing. Through their new partnership, Spyder and UPP will seek to expand the reach of Spyder’s marketing presence in response to an increased demand for its products within and outside the ski industry in recent years. 

    According to Russ Rowan, Spyder’s VP of Sales and Global Marketing, Spyder has – for some time –been actively seeking a strategic partner to help it continue the positive growth path it began when it underwent some much needed changes about three years ago. “After significant research and several discovery meetings, we engaged the services of veteran agency UPP, fully trusting that they will be able to assist us with branded integration, celebrity outreach, and brand exposure initiatives via the entertainment industry,” noted Rowan. “UPP will be working with us to make sure our products are being worn by the right people to gain maximum exposure for the Spyder brand, and ensure that our core brand identity is carried forward and not altered or diluted as we continue to grow,” said Rowan.

  • New Sourcing Snow Trade Show Will Debut During 2013 SIA Snow Show

    SIA launches new sourcing tradeshow, Sourcing Snow, for 2013. Spyder employee, Joann Smith, will join other industry veterans as a Task Force Member for the event.

    Washington, DC (June 18, 2012) -- Last week, a task force comprised of snow sports industry representatives met in Denver, Colorado to discuss and approve plans for a new trade show entitled Sourcing Snow, member-owned by the textile and material suppliers. In-conjunction with the 2013 SIA Snow Show, the show will be held in the Colorado Convention Center’s Mile High Ballroom from January 30 - February 1, 2013. Sourcing Snow will showcase companies that manufacture materials and components essential to hundreds of snow sports brands.

SIA has listened closely to the request for sourcing availability at the SIA Snow Show in Denver and has responded with a scenario that is not only smart, but takes into consideration the challenges and needs of its members to have the opportunity to work with their supply chain.     We're pleased to announce the recent hire of industry veteran, Ariana Burkley, as the new key account manager in the Rocky Mountain Territory.

    Spyder has hired Ariana Burkley as a Key Account Manager. Effective June 4, 2012, Ariana will assume responsibility for Spyder’s key accounts in the Rocky Mountain Region. Ariana will report to Spyder’s VP of Sales for North America, Ellen Welley.

Certified International Ski Instructor, and has worked as an independent and company sales representative for ski and outdoor brands in the Colorado and Utah territories for over fifteen years. She has interfaced with a wide range of ski related businesses, from high-end apparel lines to hard goods manufacturers, and in formats ranging from small specialty boutiques to big box retailers.

  • Ring of Fire Tour

    May 19, 2012

    A journey of epic proportions.

    On Saturday May 17, 2012, Chris Davenport and Jess McMillan completed the Volcano Tour by scaling and skiing Mt. Baker in Washington – their 15th volcano in 14 days! 

    Their accomplishment is truly amazing, and a lot of things had to come together to make it a reality – they were blessed with near-perfect weather, were joined by supportive friends along the way (including fellow Spyder athlete Daron Rahlves), had the benefit of nutritious and power-packed menus from Whole Foods Market, and were able to recharge their batteries in the Spyder Land Yacht between volcanoes. 

    All in, they traveled well over 100 miles on their feet, and ascended close to 80,000 vertical feet!

    The Spyder Distribution Network (SDN) has added a new, apparel-specific facility in Lewisville, TX to improve upon its service commitment to its dealer base.

    Spyder Active Sports, Inc., today announced that it has taken steps to enhance its product distribution network in order to further support current market demand and accommodate future growth objectives. Specifically, the Spyder Distribution Network (SDN) has added a new, apparel-specific facility in Lewisville, TX to improve upon its service commitment to its dealer base.

    This move comes after three years of consecutive growth for Spyder, and after assessing the accompanying need to address challenges in its vertical supply chain. Spyder’s leadership is confident that – in a business where there’s no room for delays, errors, and poor supply chain execution – the combination of the new Texas facility and a smoother operating network in the Far East will streamline the way Spyder gets its products to customers.

    “We’re very excited to bring a state of the art facility online to accommodate Spyder’s current and future growth,” said Ellen Welley, Spyder’s VP of Sales for North America. “The new facility has the capacity to sustain that growth for many years to come.” Spyder’s Director of Supply Chain, Outbound Services Nate Peterson added, "We’re confident that by adding this facility and personnel expertise and support to our network, we can meet the demands of our dealers and offer the best service available."

    Spyder has identified three key factors that played into the decision to enhance the SDN: First, The core competencies of the facility are apparel and apparel supply chain management – it will add nearly a century’s worth of experience to the SDN; second, current achievable volumes through the new Texas facility exceed 6 million pick and pack apparel units – the facility is also poised for future expansion to accommodate increased demand; third, the new facility understands and is able to accommodate the unique dynamics present in a high-volume peak business operating within seasonal demand windows.

    Spyder is confident that making these enhancements to the SDN, it will achieve: (1) faster transit times from its factories to the Texas facility, (2) increased capacity and throughput capabilities, (3) faster transit times from the Texas facility to its dealers (can deliver to 93% of dealer base in three days or less), and (4) because it operates in a Free Trade Zone, seamless import of goods for more rapid distribution to its entire North American dealer / sales rep base.

    The Lewisville, TX facility will be brought online as part of the SDN for the Fall 2012 selling season. The SDN will continue to support additional needs of dealers, sales reps, and Spyder’s corporate office with an existing facility in Aurora, CO.

    of Sales for North America. Effective April 1, 2012, Welley will assume 
    direct responsibility for Spyder’s sales function for North America. In 
    her new role, Welley will report to Spyder’s VP of Sales and Global 
    Marketing, Russ Rowan.



    “Ellen has become an indispensible ingredient in Spyder’s recipe for 
    success,” said Russ Rowan, Spyder’s VP of Sales and Global Marketing. 
    “We’ve experienced solid, sustainable growth for our third consecutive

    portion of that growth is due to our great sales team, the drive they

    Welley has been a loyal member of the Spyder team since 2002, when she 
    was hired as a Key Account Manager. Prior to her coming to Spyder, she 
    worked as a buyer for Boulder based retailer Boulder Ski Deals and as a 
    Divisional Merchandise Manager for Specialty Sports Venture, which has 
    over 150 outdoor specialty stores.

    Spyder Active Sports, Inc. and 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation have entered into a formal four-year partnership.  This alliance will further integrate the best in class technical and performance attributes of 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation with Spyder’s ever-evolving collection of premium technical winter sport apparel.

Amidst the rugged textures of the custom wood bar built by Colorado’s lifestyle artisans The Public Works, models mixed bright, poppy colors from Spyder’s Fall 2012 Women’s line with Veuve Clicquot’s signature ‘Yellow Label’ glow.

  • Spyder Brings Starr Quality to New Marketing Manager Position

    Jaime Starr joins the Spyder crew

    Spyder names Jamie Starr as its new marketing manager. Jamie will drive all of Spyder’s web content, social and viral media, public relations, digital initiatives and product stories out of the company’s Boulder headquarters effective March.

    Starr brings a skill set to Spyder that is unique to the industry, coupling his deep roots in the ski world with his background in marketing, social media, web content, copywriting and journalism. Jamie previously worked in positions as managing editor and brand consultant for the Spear Creative Group, and as an editor of Aspen based SNOW Magazine. 

    Starr hails from Crested Butte, CO and holds both undergraduate and J.D. degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is an avid skier, cyclist and is well versed in technology, social media, gadgetry, photography, film, music and culture.
