1. How did you come up with the story line for 'The Process'?
CD: When we heard about the opportunity to participate in the REDirect2016 competition from my friends at Outside Television, we immediately knew it was something we wanted to be involved with. Our first course of action was to prepare a treatment, the film's concept, and deliver that to RED and Outside TV. Jesse and I both agreed that we wanted to use this powerful camera to make something beautiful and cinematic. Initially we were thinking that the story would be one of mentorship and discovery in the mountains, but the concept morphed into more of a look at why we go, which became 'The Process'.
2. What was this experience like for you as an athlete?
CD: It’s a ton of fun doing independent short films because there are few rules and you can take full advantage of your creative vision. We were not held back by a sponsor’s expectations or a production company's demands of style. The other element that we both enjoyed was going out into our local mountains and exploring different ways to shoot in places we may have already been. We both have high standards when it comes to our work so we wanted to be as professional as possible with this project.
3. You work together quite a bit, what was it like to work on a story like this together?
CD: Working with Jesse was a ton of fun. We have spent so much time together in the mountains, here in Aspen and in Portillo, that we know exactly what each other expects. Jesse definitely put in the bulk of the work on this so all the credit goes to him for how the project came out in the end.
4. What was it about this story you wanted to share, and, what did you want people to walk away with after watching this film?
CD: I think we both wanted people to feel emotion when watching this film, a sense of their passion or love for the mountains welling up inside them. We hope the audience agrees with our take on the concept that while we love the physical activity of skiing, its really about so much more than just the turns. The idea of 'The Process' is the idea of what it means to be a skier, to literally have that one word define you.
