Green Theme – Spyder Charges Toward 2008-2009 With Significant Eco Momentum
Boulder, CO - October 15, 2008
Spyder Active Sports, the world's largest ski specialty brand, is continuing to make bold, "green" strides toward reducing its carbon footprint and helping shift the industry paradigm toward responsible business practices. From operational commitments including its recent shift to wind-generated power, to incorporation of recycled materials in trade show booth structures and labels and expansion of innovative eco-product in its new collection, Spyder is committed to sustainability for the long term.
WIND POWERED FACILITIES
- In 2006 Spyder upgraded its electric power from conventional sources to environmentally sound wind-generated power for several facilities including its Boulder, Colorado headquarters, two distribution centers, and product showroom.
- The 100% wind-generated electricity is a renewable source that creates no air, land or water emissions.
TRADE SHOW BOOTHS & FIXTURES
Spyder's award-winning Venom trade show booth, Spyder brand booth, and in-store fixtures employ eco-friendly construction materials:
- Harvested bamboo flooring and walls
- Recyclable acrylic and aluminum fixtures
- Powder coated paint = most eco friendly way of painting
- Greenguard certified Nevamar brand Laminates = low emissions for cleaner air
- Eco friendly adhesives = Green Seal glue
- LED lighting in decks
- We significantly reduced the need for Truss lighting in booths, thus saving on energy and reducing manual labor.
- In-store fixtures have recyclable aluminum and plastic. Spyder is actively researching recycling centers in major metro areas to assist retailers in their recycling efforts when the fixtures become out-of-date.
- Spyder sources fixtures from regional manufacturers, reducing the amount of carbon output due to transport.
- Point-of-sale materials are shipped via UPS as often as possible due to the shipping company's successful emission-reduction efforts.
COLLATERAL
- Spyder prints consumer and trade workbooks using Forest Stewardship Council approved recycled paper.
- Beginning in the Fall 2008 season, all Spyder hangtags are produced on 100% recycled paper.
USE OF ALTERNATIVE FABRICATIONS IN SPYDER PRODUCT
Spyder continually brings innovative materials to market, whether by partnership or as proprietary technology, offering the consumer the most advanced menu of technical options to heighten comfort and performance.
Bamboo
Used in our sexy new women's Jet Jacket and Jet Pant and our Dreamy next-to-skin layering pieces, bamboo is an environmentally sound option to traditional fibers, yet presents benefits beyond its uniqueness. Spyder's organically-grown bamboo-based yarn is biodegradable and has natural antimicrobial, wicking and quick-drying benefits. Superior in luxury, bamboo has a natural luster and soft hand. Our bamboo blend yarn has a unique microstructure that allows first-layer apparel to absorb and evaporate perspiration faster than any other fabric. Bamboo-based yarn also has natural anti-UV characteristics, provides excellent UPF protection, and is naturally hypoallergenic and non-irritating to the skin. Baselayer options include the Dreamy V-neck Top, Dreamy Mock Top, and Dreamy Pant.
Recycled Fleece
In an effort to get as many people on the bandwagon as possible, Spyder revamped its most popular fleece styles - the Outlaw Jacket and Raider Vest for men and women, and the Windstop Vest and Speed T-neck for men - by converting the traditional fabric to recycled fleece. Since the material was remarkably warm and cozy, we didn't stop with the easy picks; we included recycled fleece in 2 new T-necks each for women and men that demanded comfort and performance. Recycling polyester reduces fossil fuel consumption and green house gases versus producing new polyester and reduces landfill waste. And when recycled fleece wears comfortably, styles well, and performs as well as traditional fleece, there's no reason not to drive the bandwagon.
Thinsulate™ Thermal Insulation with Recycled Fibers
Spyder and Thinsulate™ insulation have partnered for decades, and continue to raise the bar in performance apparel with the introduction of Thinsulate recycled insulation. This quality synthetic insulation reuses resources like recycled soda bottles, diverting waste from landfills. It contains 50% polyolefin and 50% recycled polyester fibers, containing a minimum of 27% post-consumer waste. True to Thinsulate™ insulation performance standards, this insulation provides about one-and-a-half times the warmth of down and about twice the warmth of other high loft insulating materials. Thinsulate™ Thermal Insulation with Recycled Fibers is found in our Old Freddie men's jacket and the women's Breakaway Insulator Jacket.
